Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Unemployment, particularly among the youth, has been identified as a significant driver of criminal activities in many parts of Nigeria. In Suleja LGA, Niger State, a high rate of youth unemployment has contributed to the increasing involvement of young people in various forms of criminal activities, including armed robbery, drug trafficking, and violent protests. According to Umar and Ahmed (2025), the lack of employment opportunities has pushed many young people into illegal economic activities, as they seek ways to survive and gain financial independence. This study will examine the impact of unemployment on youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA, focusing on the underlying socio-economic factors that lead to this involvement and the implications for local security.
