Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Unemployment, particularly among the youth, has been identified as a significant driver of criminal activities in many parts of Nigeria. In Suleja LGA, Niger State, a high rate of youth unemployment has contributed to the increasing involvement of young people in various forms of criminal activities, including armed robbery, drug trafficking, and violent protests. According to Umar and Ahmed (2025), the lack of employment opportunities has pushed many young people into illegal economic activities, as they seek ways to survive and gain financial independence. This study will examine the impact of unemployment on youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA, focusing on the underlying socio-economic factors that lead to this involvement and the implications for local security.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The high rate of unemployment among youth in Suleja LGA has resulted in a rise in criminal activities, with young people engaging in illegal activities due to a lack of legitimate job opportunities. This has led to increased insecurity in the region, as well as challenges for law enforcement agencies in managing youth-related crime. This study seeks to investigate the impact of unemployment on youth involvement in criminal activities, with a focus on identifying the key factors contributing to this trend and recommending potential solutions.

  • What strategies can be implemented to reduce youth unemployment and criminal involvement in Suleja LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Unemployment does not significantly influence youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA.

  • H₁: Unemployment significantly influences youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA.

  • H₂: Reducing unemployment will significantly decrease youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how unemployment drives youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA. The findings will provide policymakers, local governments, and community organizations with the knowledge needed to design effective interventions to address youth unemployment and improve security in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on youth involvement in criminal activities in Suleja LGA, Niger State, and will examine the role of unemployment as a contributing factor. It will not address other socio-economic challenges affecting youth in the region. Limitations include potential challenges in obtaining accurate data from vulnerable populations due to their reluctance to engage in research studies.
